It seems that technology has invaded our life unconsciously. We have to cope with it, or we'll become outdated.
You are exactly taking the words from my mouth. We teachers need to know what role we play. While we could be actors on the stage, I believe the stage belongs to the learners. It would be in accordance with the concept of the student-centered paradigm, wouldn't it?

I had similar experiences when studying in the US. But as you say, the challenges in the English-speaking environment were beneficial to our listening comprehension and speaking ability. This reminds us of the importance of creating a desirable learning environment for our learners, in which they could immerse themselves into the target language learning. Billy and Harry did give us some good ideas, didn't they?

It's definitely not easy to put theories into practice, especially for novice teachers like you. Generally speaking, your teaching demonstration was well-organized with a meaningful topic and clear objectives. There are things need to be mended, of course. I am sure a teacher who reflects on her own teaching constantly would make progress in the process. Pretty soon, you would shape your own teaching styles and have more confidence.

Tiffany,

I understand the mixed feelings you have here. On the one hand, we all expect to have a "perfect" or "ideal" teaching context, in which we can really put all the ideas into practices without any difficulties. On the other hand, we all understand in reality, there are more to deal with since it is human souls that we are dealing with rather than just the target language alone. I'm glad you are prepared to face the challenges with a determination to learn more so as to be well-prepared. The more teachers like you there are, the more hopeful our education would be.

Dear Tiffany,

Thanks for the idea you shared with me. Through your words I figure out that maybe I lack confidence in myself, so I do not believe that I have the quality and ability to become a teacher; that’s why, while facing to the failures in my teaching demonstration, I lose my faith to overcome it. However, thanks for every one of you, my classmates, you left your advice in my blog to encourage me and help me get to through the dilemma, I’ll keep in my mind. Thank you!

Hi, Tiffany,

Nowadays, many high school English teachers recognize the importance of conducting classes in the target language. Therefore, teachers' speaking proficiency is seen as an important index in this field. However, of course, in reality, teachers need to be flexible according to many different factors. For example, while we know how good it is for students when they are given enough imput, we still take into account their level and ability. One thing that we teachers have to bear in mind is, "Never give up easily." Some teachers find a good excuse of not using English when students or even parents ask them not to. Rather than give in, we have to explain the underpinning rationale and use proper strategies to invite students to cooperate. Both sides would benefit from the insistence.

Dear Alice:
During the observation, I found that almost all students were accustomed to all-English environment, namely, they all understood what the teacher said and responded perfectly. Those students were fabulous! I have a question here: Do all English teachers in Lishan reach an agreement that they use English in the whole class or it depends on the level of students? English teaching in those classes I’ve seen is really successful.
